How to choose the right combat sports gloves?
Choosing the right gloves depends primarily on the sport you train and how you intend to use them. Different gloves are designed for partner training, heavy bag workouts or competition. The right gloves protect your hands while also helping to keep your training partner safe.
Sparring gloves for partner training
Sparring gloves are the most common choice for regular boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai training. They feature extra protective padding and are designed to provide a higher level of safety during partner work. When choosing sparring gloves, consider the correct size, glove weight and the intensity of your training.
Bag gloves for heavy bag and pad training
Bag gloves are designed primarily for striking practice on heavy bags, focus mitts and other training equipment. Compared to sparring gloves, they place greater emphasis on durability and impact feedback. Choosing the right bag gloves helps you improve both technique and punching power.
Competition gloves for official competitions
Competition gloves are intended for use in combat sports competitions. Their construction, weight and specifications are determined by the rules of the relevant federation or event. Always check the requirements of your competition before making your choice.
MMA gloves for mixed martial arts
MMA gloves have a different design from traditional boxing gloves. They are built for a combination of striking, grappling and ground fighting. Their open-finger construction allows for gripping while still providing protection during striking.
What size boxing gloves should you choose?
Boxing glove sizes are typically measured in ounces (oz). The most common sizes range from 10 oz to 18 oz.
10 - 12 oz: lighter gloves suitable for speed training, technical drills and certain competition purposes.
14 - 16 oz: the most common choice for sparring and regular partner training thanks to their increased protective padding.
When choosing the right size, consider not only the glove weight, but also your body size, experience level and your coach's recommendation.
